# How is kidney cancer diagnosed?

If kidney cancer is possible, a GP arranges urine tests and refers you for imaging. CT of the kidneys is the usual way a mass is characterised. MRI is used if CT is not suitable. ## What scans are used?

CT urogram or a dedicated kidney CT shows size, enhancement and whether the cancer has grown into veins or nearby organs. Chest imaging looks for spread.

## When is a biopsy done?

If the plan is to watch a small mass, or if surgery would be high risk, a needle biopsy can confirm the type. Many people go straight to surgery when imaging is typical.

## What about cystoscopy?

If blood in the urine might be coming from the bladder, a camera test of the bladder is often added. Kidney and bladder pathways overlap on that symptom.
