Gifts in wills

# Free will writing — protect your loved ones, leave a legacy

Writing a will is one of the most important things you can do for the people you love — and free will-writing services make it easy. If you choose, you can also leave a lasting gift to charity.

Is there a free will writing service?

Yes — several established UK schemes let adults write or update a will free of charge, including dedicated will-writing weeks. There is never any obligation to leave a charitable gift. Paid online wills such as SwiftWill are separate. Gifts to charity in a will are free of Inheritance Tax.

Many UK adults put off writing a will. Yet without one, the law — not you — decides who inherits. Free will-writing schemes remove the cost barrier, letting you write or update a valid will at no charge, often during dedicated will-writing weeks. Paid online wills are a different product: [SwiftWill](https://swiftwill.co.uk/) publishes a one-time fee for a straightforward England and Wales will. You still print it and sign it with two independent adult witnesses. World Aid Network does not sell wills and does not rank firms.

While your will is open, many people choose to leave a **gift in their will** to a cause they care about. Charitable gifts are exempt from Inheritance Tax, and leaving 10% or more of your net estate to charity can reduce the Inheritance Tax rate on the rest of your estate from 40% to 36% — benefiting both your chosen cause and your loved ones.

World Aid Network is a UK Charitable Incorporated Organisation with charity registration in progress (application 5290505). You can name us in a will now using our legal name and address; ask the solicitor or will writer to add the registered number when it is granted. Suggested wording is on the [legacy giving](/legacy-giving) page. There is never any obligation to leave a charitable gift.

## Frequently asked questions

Is there a free will writing service for charity gifts?

Yes. Several established schemes let UK adults write or update a will free of charge — including dedicated will-writing weeks. There is never any obligation to leave a gift to charity when you use them. Paid online wills such as SwiftWill are a different product: they charge a fee and are not a free solicitor-week scheme.

Why should I write a will?

A will makes sure your wishes are carried out and your loved ones are provided for. If you die without one, the law decides who inherits — which may not reflect your wishes. Writing a will also lets you, if you choose, leave a gift to causes you care about, and can help reduce Inheritance Tax.

Are charity gifts in a will tax-free?

Yes. Gifts to charity in your will are exempt from Inheritance Tax. What is more, if you leave at least 10% of your net estate to charity, the Inheritance Tax rate on the rest of your estate can be reduced from 40% to 36% — so a charitable legacy can also benefit the people you leave behind.

What is the difference between a will gift and an in-memory donation?

A gift in your will (a legacy) is arranged now but takes effect after you die, and can be a fixed sum, a percentage of your estate, or a specific item. An in-memory donation is given by others in memory of someone who has already died. Both are meaningful ways to support a cause; they simply happen at different times.

Can I leave a gift to World Aid Network in my will?

Yes. Use World Aid Network’s full legal name, London address and Charity Commission application 5290505\. Suggested wording is on our legacy giving page. Ask your solicitor or will writer to add the registered number when it is granted.

Is SwiftWill a free will scheme?

No. SwiftWill (https://swiftwill.co.uk/) is a paid online will for England and Wales. You still print the document and sign it with two independent adult witnesses. World Aid Network does not sell wills and is not a SwiftWill product.

## How do you write your will — and leave the world a little kinder?

A will protects the people you love. And if you choose, a gift in your will can fund sight-restoring surgery, cancer treatment and disaster relief for generations to come.
