Frequently asked questions about Gift Aid
What is Gift Aid?
Gift Aid is a UK government scheme that lets registered charities reclaim the basic-rate income tax you have already paid on your donation. For every £1 you give, the charity can claim an extra 25p from HMRC — at no cost to you.
How much does Gift Aid add to my donation?
Gift Aid adds 25p to every £1. A £40 gift becomes £50. A £200 gift becomes £250. A £1,000 gift becomes £1,250.
Who is eligible?
You are eligible if you are a UK taxpayer who has paid at least as much income or capital gains tax as the charity will claim (25% of your donation) in the current tax year.
Can overseas donors use Gift Aid?
No. Gift Aid is a UK-only scheme. Donors from outside the UK are not eligible. US donors may explore giving via a Donor Advised Fund — contact [email protected] to discuss.
What if my tax status changes?
If you stop being a UK taxpayer after ticking a Gift Aid declaration, you should notify the charity. You are responsible for any shortfall between what HMRC pays the charity and the tax you actually paid.
Is Gift Aid the same as payroll giving?
No. Payroll giving (Give As You Earn) is a separate scheme where donations are taken from your salary before tax, giving you automatic tax relief. Gift Aid applies to donations made from your net pay or other income.
