Indonesia Earthquake & Tsunami Appeal

This morning a magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off Flores. When the ground shakes or the sea comes in, a family can lose everything that keeps them alive before breakfast: the roof over the children’s beds, the well in the yard, the rice that was meant to last the week. The shock came before dawn. A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the north coast of Flores. People on the island and on neighbouring islands were shaken from their sleep. Indonesia’s weather and geophysics agency issued a tsunami warning for East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi and Southeast Sulawesi. Aftershocks followed. Tide gauges recorded smaller waves along the coast, including at Labuan Bajo, Sikka and Dompu.

We do not yet have a full picture of every damaged house. We do know what families need after a shock like this: drinking water if a well is spoiled, food if the market cannot open, and a dry place to sleep if they are afraid to go back inside. The earthquake struck in the evening. It was a powerful shock, felt across North Maluku and North Sulawesi. In Manado, a building collapse took a life. On the Batang Dua Islands, close to the epicentre, families walked away from damaged houses. By 6 April, local reports said 1,966 people were displaced and more than a hundred homes were heavily damaged.

A tsunami warning went out. Waves of up to 75 centimetres were recorded in North Minahasa. For a coastal family, even a smaller wave can spoil a well and ruin a food store. That is a week without safe water. That is a child drinking from a dirty source. Your gift can stop that.
