Emergency Relief

When a river bursts or the ground shakes, a family can lose the three things that keep them alive before breakfast: the rice that was meant to last the week, the well in the yard, and the roof over the children’s beds. They run with what they can carry. Then they wait. That wait is what this programme is for.

Please donate to emergency relief. World Aid Network is a UK charity. Trustees release gifts to vetted local partner organisations in Pakistan, Indonesia and Malaysia — the three countries in our charitable Objects. Partners buy supplies nearby and deliver them. We do not fly our own field teams. We do not send cash to individuals.

You do not have to pack a box. You do not have to travel. The useful thing you can do tonight is give by card. A gift of £10 can cover drinking water for a family for a week. £25 can cover a hygiene kit. £50 can cover food for two weeks. £100 can help put a temporary roof over someone’s head. Please give what you can.

The cameras leave. The need does not. A child still needs clean water the morning after the flood. An older person still needs a tarpaulin when aftershocks make a cracked house unsafe. Parents still need something to cook when the market cannot open. That is why a standing emergency fund matters more than a one-day collection.

Contaminated water is often the deadliest threat after a flood. Sewage and debris mix with drinking supplies. In crowded shelters, diarrhoeal illness spreads fast, especially among young children. Hygiene kits sit with water for that reason: soap, sanitary items and water-purification supplies stop the second wave of harm.

In Pakistan, monsoon rains and glacial melt routinely burst rivers and submerge whole districts. In Indonesia, flash floods and landslides follow heavy rain. Families lose homes, crops and clean water in a matter of hours. The danger does not end when the water recedes: contaminated wells spread disease, and people are left without food or a dry floor.

Please give to flood relief rather than sending parcels. Money lets partners buy rice, water-purification supplies, hygiene kits and tarpaulins locally — faster and cheaper than a container from Britain. Earthquakes give no warning. Homes collapse. Water pipes break. People sleep outside because they are afraid the roof will fall. Cold, thirst and hunger become deadly quickly. Speed depends on funds and partners being ready in advance — not on a new campaign launched after the pictures appear.

Please donate to earthquake relief. Local partners buy tarpaulins, drinking water, food parcels and hygiene kits nearby. Disaster gifts do not pay for search-and-rescue teams, reconstruction or hospital bills. Those sit outside this programme. Cancer treatment and cataract surgery have their own appeals.

A tsunami does not only take houses. It spoils wells, washes away rice stores, and leaves people sleeping in schools, mosques and on higher ground. The first things they ask for are simple: drinking water, a hot meal, a tarpaulin, a hygiene kit for the children. That is what tsunami relief pays for.

Indonesia has lived with this fear for a generation. The Indian Ocean tsunami of 26 December 2004 took more than 167,000 lives in Indonesia alone. The Palu tsunami of September 2018 killed thousands more. Please give to the Indonesia Tsunami Appeal — it is the same page as the Indonesia Emergency Appeal — so we can meet people when they reach safety.

We cannot stop the sea. We can meet families with food, clean water and something over their heads. Please donate. Your gift is how a mother fills a bottle for her child after the wave has gone.

A monsoon is predictable on the calendar and sudden on the ground. Partners who already hold kits can move on day one. Partners who must wait for a new appeal cannot. That is why a standing emergency fund is the honest way to fund flood relief.

The 2022 Pakistan floods affected more than 33 million people and damaged about 1.7 million homes. Those are published disaster figures. They describe the scale of the event, not how many families World Aid Network has reached. We do not invent caseloads. We ask you to fund food, water and shelter for the next family who will need them.

These figures are typical kit costs quoted by local partners. Actual prices move with local markets after a disaster. Trustees release restricted gifts only for emergency food, safe drinking water, hygiene items that sit with water, and temporary shelter — including winter warmth where families are still displaced in the cold.

Dirty water spreads disease faster than hunger in the first days after a flood. That is why hygiene kits belong with water, not with a medical clinic. Partners buy them locally so the contents match what a household actually uses.

Shelter kits are temporary. They are not a rebuilt house, a repaired farm or a new school. A tarpaulin on the night of the quake is the difference between a dry child and a night in the rain. Please give so a partner can put that kit in someone’s hands.

Winter is a second emergency for families already displaced. Extra blankets and weatherproof sheets keep people alive in cold, mountainous parts of Pakistan. That warmth is shelter, not a heating project. Please donate before the coldest weeks if you can.

Deployment follows an official declaration from the relevant national agency — NDMA in Pakistan, BNPB in Indonesia, or NADMA in Malaysia. That governance protects donor intent. Standing funds mean partners already hold relationships and, where possible, pre-positioned stocks, so they are not starting from nothing when the declaration comes.

Administrative costs are met from separate unrestricted funds, not from a restricted emergency gift. Once Charity Commission registration is granted, accounts will be published on the register. We release deployment reports when a fund is activated.

Local partners know what a family needs that week. A container of unused coats does not. Bottled water shipped from the UK is heavy, slow and expensive compared with purification supplies bought in the next town.

This restriction is deliberate. It protects donor intent and our standing with the Charity Commission. If you want to fund a cataract operation, use Gift of Sight.
