What is the Clean Water Emergency Appeal?

This appeal funds safe drinking water for disaster-affected families in Pakistan, Indonesia and Malaysia. Floods spoil wells. Earthquakes break pipes. Your gift becomes purification, bottled water or a household filter — not a new city reservoir.

A family can run from a flood and still drink dirty water that night. Children dehydrate fast. Cholera, typhoid and dysentery follow spoiled wells. In past disasters, disease after the flood has killed people the water itself did not. That wait is where your donation matters.

We do not build permanent water networks from this appeal. Reconstruction sits outside our Objects.

You do not have to ship bottles from Britain. The most useful thing you can do tonight is donate. Gifts of any amount contribute towards emergency drinking water; quantities depend on local quotes and assessed needs.

Why is water the next emergency after a flood or quake?

Wells are spoiled. Pipes break. People drink what they can find. Unsafe water can increase the risk of illness. Dirty water is often the next killer.

The cameras show the flood. They rarely show the child with diarrhoea a few days later.

This fund exists as its own appeal so donors who want their gift to buy water can say so. Broader emergency relief still includes water. Use this page if you want the gift marked for water.

How is clean water delivered after a disaster?

Partners use what the ground allows: bottled water in the first days, household purification tablets, point-of-use filters, and mobile units for larger camps.

Where roads are cut, boats and motorbikes still move tablets and jerrycans. Pre-positioned stocks in high-risk areas shorten the wait. Your gift is what fills those stocks.

How emergency water is typically delivered
Method When partners use it
Purification tablets Gifts of any amount contribute towards emergency drinking water; quantities depend on local quotes and assessed needs.
Bottled water First days, when wells are unsafe and cooking water is gone
Household filters Families who will be displaced for longer than a few days
Hygiene kits Soap, jerrycans and sanitary items so dirty water does not become the next killer

Why is access to safe drinking water urgent after disaster?

Flood damage to water supplies can increase exposure to unsafe water. Your gift shortens that wait.

Money that has already been given can move when the flood comes. A standing water fund matters more than a late appeal after the first cases of diarrhoea.

Should I fund tablets, bottles or filters?

You do not have to choose. Trustees and partners use what the ground allows that week. Figures on this page are a guide to typical costs, not a menu you pick for a named village.

Tablets treat water a family already has. Bottles help when there is nothing safe to treat. Filters help a household that will be displaced longer. Mobile units serve more people in a camp. Partners will kit what is needed.

What will my donation to the Clean Water Emergency Appeal provide?

Your donation pays for emergency safe water. Gifts of any amount contribute towards emergency drinking water; quantities depend on local quotes and assessed needs.

Please choose an amount and donate. What a family receives depends on the disaster and the ground. That is the promise of this appeal. You give. We turn your money into something safe to drink.

How does my donation reach a family who needs water?

You donate. Trustees release funds when disaster-driven water need is confirmed. Local partners buy purification, bottled water or filters nearby and deliver them. We do not send cash to individuals.

If you want to give in memory of someone, or as a group, write to [email protected] and we will mark the gift for the Clean Water Emergency Appeal.

How quickly will my donation become safe drinking water?

Card donations are processed straight away. Delivery timing depends on assessed need, access, available funds and partner capacity; no response time is guaranteed. Cut roads take longer. Your gift still means a family can drink without waiting for a new campaign.

Can I give monthly to the Clean Water Emergency Appeal?

Yes — a monthly donation keeps purification stocks ready. Please set up a regular gift on this page. Even a small monthly amount helps partners answer the next spoiled well. You can also give in memory of someone you love.

Please start a monthly gift at the amount that is comfortable for you. You can change it later. If you would rather give once, that gift is welcome too. Donate today.

Do you dig wells or rebuild city water from this appeal?

No. This appeal is emergency access — purification, bottled water, filters and mobile units — not permanent infrastructure. Reconstruction sits outside our Objects.

Both jobs matter. They are not the same job.

Should I send bottled water from Britain?

Money is more useful. Partners buy or purify water nearby. Bottles from the UK arrive late and cost more than they help. A card gift on this page is the fastest way to help.

A container of British bottles is slow, heavy and often the wrong response. Local purchase is faster and cheaper.

How we will report on this appeal

We publish an appeal’s figures only after they are reconciled and checked. The first report will appear here with its reporting period, money received, payments to partners and what was delivered. A missing figure means it has not been published yet.

Frequently asked questions

Why is water a separate appeal?

So donors who want their gift to buy water can say so. Broader emergency relief still includes water; this fund is restricted to it.

Do you dig wells?

Not from this appeal. It is emergency access — purification, bottled water, filters, hygiene kits and mobile units — not permanent infrastructure.

Do you fund hygiene kits?

Yes. Hygiene kits sit with this water appeal because dirty water spreads disease after a flood. We do not rebuild sanitation networks.

Should I send bottled water from Britain?

Money is more useful. Local purchase is faster and cheaper.

How quickly can water be delivered?

Delivery timing depends on assessed need, access, available funds and partner capacity. Cut roads take longer.

Will Gift Aid apply?

Gift Aid requires HMRC recognition, donor eligibility and a valid declaration. We will contact donors when that happens.

Can I give monthly?

Yes. A monthly donation keeps purification stocks ready. You can also give a one-off gift.

Can I donate in memory of someone?

Yes. Write to [email protected] and we will mark the gift for the Clean Water Emergency Appeal.

What does £10 pay for?

Typically water purification tablets making about 200 litres safe to drink.

How is this different from the Floods Appeal?

The Floods Appeal covers food, water and shelter together. This appeal is restricted to emergency drinking water.

Does this appeal fund cancer treatment?

No. Cancer treatment is a separate appeal. This page is for safe water after disaster.

How else can you help families after dirty water takes hold?

Water sits beside food and shelter. You can donate here, or give to the floods and hunger appeals.

How can you donate to the Clean Water Emergency Appeal now?

Donate on this page. Your gift becomes safe water for a family whose well was spoiled.
