Christmas Appeal

Christmas is when many people in the UK look for a gift that means something. UNICEF, Save the Children and Oxfam all ask then. So do we. The useful gift is not wrapping paper. It is a hospital bill a family cannot meet, or food, water and shelter after a disaster.

Please give to the Christmas Appeal. The flagship Christmas gift on this page is sight: a complete cataract operation at a partner hospital, typically about £200. You can also give towards cancer treatment — all types of cancer, not research and not NHS care — or towards emergency relief. Disaster gifts are food, clean water, hygiene kits and shelter. They do not rebuild houses or fund medical clinics.

You do not have to travel. You do not have to pack a box. The useful thing you can do tonight is donate. Please give what you can.

People search “donate to charity at Christmas” because they want the season to reach further than their own family. That is a good instinct. The kindest Christmas charity gift is usually money given to a cause you trust, not a parcel posted from Britain.

Cataracts do not pause for 25 December. A chemotherapy course does not. A family sleeping under plastic after a flood still needs drinking water on Boxing Day. Please give to the Christmas Appeal so partners can keep lists moving when UK offices slow down.

Choose the amount that fits. A smaller gift is pooled. A gift of £200 is how most donors mark a Christmas Gift of Sight. We do not invent caseloads. We do not promise that your pound reaches a named person this week. We do promise it pays partner hospitals and local partners against trustee-approved lists — never cash to individuals.

You do not need to give twice. A Christmas gift marked for eye surgery is the same programme as Gift of Sight: locally licensed ophthalmologists in registered hospitals in Pakistan, Indonesia and Malaysia. We fund the cost. We do not employ surgeons.

Churches, Bible study groups and Christian individuals are warmly welcome — as are mosques, temples, gurdwaras, workplaces and people who give with no faith at all. We do not issue a religious ruling. We do not reserve Christmas gifts for Christian patients.

Indonesia’s census records a large Christian population, many in eastern provinces where Christmas is widely observed. That is a published demographic fact, not a World Aid Network caseload. We also work in Pakistan and Malaysia. Gifts follow need and our Objects, not a donor’s assumption about who celebrates the day.

A congregation can sponsor one cataract operation at about £200. A workplace can split that cost. A school that used to pack shoeboxes can give Digital Shoebox kits instead, or give here for sight. Honesty is part of the gift: this is treatment and relief overseas, not a UK NHS bill and not a packed box from Britain.

A Christmas gift marked for eye surgery stays with cataract and related eye care. If you choose cancer or emergency relief on the donate form, it stays with that programme. Disaster money does not rebuild homes. Cancer gifts are treatment, not research.
